Atherosclerosis: In western civilization, atherosclerosis is the most common reason for a blocked artery. No one knows the exact cause or process, but there are known risk factors: smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and a family history of heart attacks or strokes. Reducing or modifying risk factors has been shown to lower the risk from blocked arteries.
