Fetal movement: The coils in the umbilical cord reflect fetal movment. Bernischke documented about 6-7 coils per 10 cm of cord. Excessive coiling may be associated with greater than normal fetal movement. Fetal movement causes of excessive fetal movement vary from exposure to excessive noise or other stimuli (including some drug exposures). On the contrary a cord with few twists represents an immobile fetus.

Cord accidents.: Overcoiled umbilical cord can be seen with very active fetuses and increased amniotic fluid and is associated with increased risk for perinatal cord accidents and variable decelerations that may require amnioinfusion and/or cesarean section to avoid injury to the fetal/neonatal brain. Your perinatologist should be able to assess you and your baby for this and offfer appropriate interventions.
