Not always lactose: Lactaid does not "fix" lactose intolerance rather tries to place an adequate amount of the enzyme, lactase, in the gut to digest the ingested lactose. There may not have been enough lactaid to "do the job", you didn't take it early enough, or the problem with that food may not have been lactose related.
