Dissolution Therapy: If mom is having pain due to the gallstones and felt to be a poor candidate for surgery, it may be worth trying to dissolve the gallstones using medication (ursodiol). This is only suitable for small, non calcified stones and takes months to work. If she has a severe attack, an interventional radiologist can place a tube into the gallbladder to rx the blockage (percutaneous cholecystostomy).

No GB surgery: If she's not having any symptoms surgery isn't necessary. If having mild symptoms, this might be controlled with diet- low fat diet. If having symptoms but really adamant about not having surgery could try meds to dissolve certain types of stones eg. Actigall (ursodiol) .Usually not best option but might be better than nothing. Also ask around.Lots of people she knows probably had laparoscopic surgery
