Many possibilities: It depends on your own experience of darkness, when you can't see what's there. Fear of the dark is very common in small children -- they fear monsters and such coming to get them. In adults, there can also be flashbacks to previous experiences that may have happened in the dark. This is a wordless place that involves your whole system. With care, it can be articulated and understood.
