Not uncommon: It is very common to have irregular and even light menses during the first year of your cycle. Some do have nausea and even diarrhea prior to or during the menses. You are correct that very athletic girls may also miss menses. If you are concerned, you and you mother may discuss you concerns with your doctor.

It happens: Regular menses is a system that requires the parts all be ready and working as a team. In the first 6m-yr after starting, many young women do not release eggs, which would otherwise reset the system. You can go a month or more between cycles in the beginning. They could vary in length and amount. This is a good time to bring the issue up with your mom.
