What are freckles?

Freckles: Freckles are flat, tanned circular spots that typically are the size of the head of a common nail. The spots are multiple and may develop randomly on the skin, especially after repeated exposure to sunlight.

Extra melanin: These develop where a clone of melanocytes that bears a minor mutation become extra-good at making melanin, especially in response to sunlight. The ability to get freckles is itself genetic. Most people who are frecklers like it; some folks seek to remove them but even laser work isn't altogether satisfactory. Everybody should use sunscreen. Photo Guy seems to like his freckles. Best wishes.
