A member asked:

I believe in holistic treatment for cancer what do you think?

Why not: Although there are a lot of holistic treatments available for cancer treatment, not a lot of them have enough research backing them up. I would not advise against it but i would also encourage you to look into modern western medicine as well. It would be difficult for me to advice using only holistic treatment for your cancer.

I do, too!: I have no doubt that people do better when treating their "mind, body, and spirit" rather than just focusing on "a disease" (exercise, counseling, nutrition are but a few examples). However, i would never replace a proven therapy with one that may help--these are meant to be supportive rather than alternative.

On what basis: All traditional treatments are proven methods backed by data, trained medical professionals will respect your opinion and will never agree with you as a main principle treatment. However will encourage you to seek such treatments in the end stage cancer patients to make as much comfortable as possible.

Be discerning: There is nothing either smart or spiritual about "just believing" something that makes you feel good, or that's promoted by a glitzy ad campaign, or that's intended to make you feel superior to "wicked" scientific physicians. Holistic Rx's are often helpful adjuncts, but if a cancer patient refuses surgery, radiation, and/or chemo as required, they lose any hope of a cure.
