Pink eye: Pink eye (conjunctivitis) refers to redness on the white of the eye and the insides of the lids caused by irritation, allergy, infection and others (glaucoma, etc). Irritation or foreign body just needs irrigation of the eye with clean water. Allergy, - antihistamines. Bacterial infection - antibiotics. Viral - antibiotics plus steroid eye drops. Pink eye tx: Antibiotic eye drops can be used to treat bacterial pink eye. Most viral conjunctivitis does not require treatment (but antiviral meds may used if it is a herpes simplex virus infection). Allergic conjunctivitis may be treated with mast cell stabilizers or antihistamines.
