Sometimes: If your pain has not responded to other drug classes such as nsaid's (i.e. Advil, (ibuprofen) motrin), rest, muscle relaxants, neuropathic agents, physical therapy, etc., then opiates within reason can be helpful.

Maybe: Narcotics are powerful pain killers. Narcotics are prescribed for severe pain. I would recommend trying other medications like nsaids, topical cream, muscle relaxants ... First before resourcing to narcotics. It is highly addicted.
