Croup: Acute laryngoyracheobronchitis otherwise known as croup is a viral infection of the upper airways that can produce the characteristic barking cough and noisy breathing in children. Rarely, this could be complicated by bacterial superinfection, especially in children hospitalized with a more severe infection. Those patients could require antibiotics, but they are the exception rather than the norm.
