A member asked:

Is low c3c and low c4c more indicative of lupus than scleroderma?

Yes: C3 and C4 are the most commonly measured complement compounds. How the test is used to monitor lupus activity: since the complement system is used by the body to help clear immune complexes from the blood, it can be used to monitor activity in lupus, particularly with glomerulonephritis and vasculitis.

Yes: Complement C3 and C4 are not indicators of scleroderma. Markers such as the centromere and the Scl-70 antibodies can be helpful in diagnosing scleroderma. However, they are not always positive in scleroderma. C3 and C4 can be low in lupus, especially if the disease is active.
