Many Risk Factors: Many risk factors can augment the effects of pressure on the skin. Any factor that lowers the perfusion of blood to an affected area, for example, will augment the chances of injury; some examples in this category include peripheral artery disease and low blood pressure, which is common during septic events.

Cause and effect: Pressure based tissue injuries develop from unrelieved pressure...Period. No pressure, no injury. Things that can increase the potential include malnutrition, immobility, fecal and urinary incontinence, previous bedsores (in the same area), mental confusion, poor blood supply to and from the area, neuropathy, and other things that affect the body's ability to heal. Pressure reduction is the key.
