Paralyzed intestine: Normally the bowel is usually moving, milking contents forward, in waves of contractions (peristalsis). When it stops, it's called ileus. It is seen with narcotic pain meds, some other medications, electrolyte imbalances, post-operatively, and in some patients with slow motility. Being very sick or bed bound can also contribute. If the underlying cause is fixed, it usually resolves with time.
