My 5 month old baby is normally happy and laughing all the time. but today he's quiet and distant. could he be sick or teething?

Could be nothing...: Keep a close eye on him the next few days as a fever or illness can creep up on you quickly. If nothing occurs just take it as an off day. Like adults have quiet days, infants do too.

Due for an illness: By 5 months the protective antibody given baby thru the placenta has faded & vulnerability to a variety of viruses is expected. Most infants have 3 gut viruses/yr & 5-7 respiratory illnesses, mostly minor.Changing activity level often is an early sign something is affecting baby. Symptoms over the next 24-48 hrs should make it more apparent.
