Days: It depends on how much alcohol someone consumes over a long period, which causes their body to become dependent on it. Acute cessation of alcohol consumption could lead to delirium tremens, which can prove fatal. Any alcohol-dependent person coming off alcohol needs to be under medical treatment to prevent this from occurring.

Varies: It may vary depending on length of dependency, alcohol level upon admission and co-morbidities. Intervention in symptom management as soon as possible will also help shorten the timeframe.

7 days is ....: All depends on amount consumed over what period. Imperfect rule of thumb is heavy drinking for 2 consecutive weeks usually places one at elevated risk for complicated w/d. Highest risk for w/d seizure is first 24-72 hours. Rare to have delirium tremens present more than 7 days after last drink. Effective treatment can reduce w/d duration, and certainly make it much safer. Please ask for help.
