It can be: Abortion can be done with medication or with a surgical procedure. Like any medication treatment or surgical procedure there are potential risks. Surgery is generally riskier than taking a medication. There are things that increase your risk which include having underlying medical problems or having an abortion later on in your pregnancy.
Dr. Michael Sparacino

Possibly: Anytime one undergoes a surgical procedure, there are small but measurable risks. First trimester abortions (less than 16 weeks) are the safest with a significant majority of women tolerating the procedure well. As the gestation increases, so do the risks. Insist on an in-depth discussion of the risks and benefits of the proposed procedure. Ask questions!

How do abortion pills work?

Dr. Lesley Meister

Interrupts hormones: Mifepristone (aka ru 486) works by interrupting the pregnancy hormones which support the growth of the growing fetus and placenta. About 48 hours later, another medicine called Misoprostol is taken to help expel the pregnancy. This type of abortion is best done prior to 7 weeks, although sometime can be used even later up to 9 weeks.

Can you explain what is abortion pill?

Dr. Sheila Goodman

2 different pills: Medical abortions are done with 2 different pills. The first is ru-486. This is hwat is usually called the abortion pill. This pill kills the pregnancy tissue. A second pill, cytotec, (misoprostol) is used to get the body to get the pregnancy tissue out. The response to these pills is not completely predictable so follow up is necessary to make sure the abortion is completed.
A 30-year-old member asked:

I know they were illegal during the 50's, but are abortions still undergone today in all countries?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jane Van Dis
Obstetrics and Gynecology 18 years experience
Yes: Many countries outlaw abortion. Women still have them even when they are outlawed, they are just more likely to die from an illegal abortion. Abortion rates, in fact, can be higher in countries where they are illegal because women typically don't have good access to birth control in those countries.
