No it's just hype: Like you say, it's just hype. Cherries are a naturally rich source of one key antioxidant called anthocyanins. Eat cherries. Don't drink juices and definitely don't take pills. They will do nothing for you.

Great snack: Cherries contain anthocyanins which help to prevent free radical damage to cells. Cherries can decrease levels of uric acid (gout).One study suggested that ingesting montgomery tart cherries helped osteoarthritis pain. One cup of cherries is only 87 calories and has 2.9 grams of fiber. Viva la cherry!
