Depends: A cesarean is needed if you have an active genital outbreak in labor. Just having a history is not a reason for the surgery.

Depends: The greatest risk is for babies born during an initial genital outbreak, with as many as 30% acquiring a serious infection.(deadly) If identified in early labor, c-section delivery can avoid passing the illness. In women with recurrent outbreaks, active or inactive, about 4% of newborns will pick up the disease during vaginal delivery. Use of oral meds to suppress outbreaks can help.
