When infected: Antibiotics should only be used when there is a specific rationale for eliminating bacteria from a specific site for a specific reason. They should not be used lightly because the complications can be severe. There are limited prophylactic uses, and many uses to treat infection, but unfortunately there is a lot of overuse and inappropriate choices.
