To prevent pregnancy: If you cannot utilize other methods of birth control and feel you have completed your family. Tubal ligation does not prevent venereal disease. If you are in a monogamous relationship have your partner consider a vasectomy instead. If future children are something you are considering both can be reversed - but with different degrees of success.
