Depends: There may be alternitives to prednisone, but it depends on what disease is being treated.

Cortisone substitute: Prednisone (5 mg): the gold standard for use when steroids are Rx'd. I like me-prednisolone (Medrol (methylprednisolone)) 4 mg better. Prednisone does not last for 24 hours (so sometimes split twice a day). Medrol (methylprednisolone) lasts overnight. Cortisone acetate used for adrenal insufficiency. Dexamethasone (Decadron) more potent - often used in eye drops or injections; Betamethasone (inhalents/shots); clobetasol (topicals) etc.
