Many reasons: The U.S. Ranks 50th in the world for maternal mortality. Poverty, pre-existing conditions, obesity, teen pregnancy, lack of prenatal care, embolism are the most common causes. Variable availability of care. Reporting can cary with direct & indirect causation. Fatalities during but unrelated to a pregnancy are termed accidental, incidental, or nonobstetrical maternal death.
