LOTS of reasons: Tachycardia (fast heart beat) can be caused by stress, anemia, infection, fever, dehydration, medication, low blood sugar, hyperthyroidism and many many other causes. Some causes are problems with the heart, others cause your normal to beat too fast. Time to call your doctor and get checked out!

Probably 'begnin': The electrical system of the heart sends regular pulses to the heart muscle to signal it to contract. Many things can disturb this natural rhythm eg electrolyte abnormalities (low potassium or magnesium), excessive stimulants eg caffeine, alcohol, nasal decongestants, certain asociated conditions such as mvp (mitral valve prolapse), anxiety, hormonal fluctuations, dreams etc.

More details needed: There are multiple reasons why people can have a racing heart. This could be cardia related such as arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) or panic (yes people can have panic in their sleep). If it only happens at night while sleeping it could also be sleep apnea. I would suggest that he sees his primary care doc about this, as most causes are treatable.

Palpitations: See your doctor! if you are having episodes of heart racing, and you are 55 yrs old with sleep apnea you may have cardiac arrhythmias. There is a higher incidence of arrhythmias in people with sleep apnea, and it could be serious if untreated. You should have your blood checked for your electrolytes and thyroid function, and tests of your heart including an ecg, echocardiogram, and holter monitor.
