Parathyroid, cancer: The two most common causes of hypercalcemia are primary hyperparathyroidism and a variety of cancers including breast cancer, lung cancer and multiple myeloma. Less common causes include vitamin d excess, sarcoidosis, and severe renal failure. Parathyroid hormone is responsible for hypercalcemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and renal failure.
