I recently gave birth and soon after i started having excess mucus with a fishy smell. how embarrassing, but i need to know if this is possibly a ph balance or something more severe.?

Often ph but...: After having a baby, especially if breastfeeding, estrogen levels drop which makes you more susceptible to ph changes which cause odor. Best thing to do is get checked by your obgyn to make sure. Good luck and congrats on your baby!

Common infection: Bacterial vaginosis (bv) is a common treatable vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth and inbalance of vaginal bacteria. This upset increases ph. Nitrites in vaginal fluid causes a fishy smell. Typically BV is treated with oral Metronidazole (flagyl), rarely vaginal gel, while abstaining during treatment. Certain probiotic vaginal capsules used can help the vagina regrow normal bacterial flora.
