Autonomic condition: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (pots) is a condition that is characterized by an abnormal heart rate rise (>30 beats per minute) with standing. The cause is unknown. Patients may present with dizziness or fainting, but often have non specific symptoms of fatigue and generalized weakness. The treatment is supportive and individualized. There is no specific cure.

Exaggerated reflex: The normal response when we go from laying, to seated, and standing positions (postural) is to have a slight decrease in blood pressure and slight increase in heart rate. Pots (as this syndrome is abbreviated) is an exagerration of this with a significant drop in blood pressure (orthostasis) and increase in heart rate (hence tachycardia). Should be evaluated by a cardiologist to make diagnosis.
