What are the complications associated with delivering multiples?

Preterm labor: Although the idea of twins or triplets sounds fun and challenging, the truth is, most multiple pregnancies are complicated by premature labors, hospitalizations, c-section for delivery, and even a higher risk of losing all the pregnancies due to a first or second trimester miscarriage.

Both mom & babies: Carrying multiple babies puts the mom and babies at increased risks of complications. These pregnancies are at a higher risk of developing diabetes, pre-eclampsia, abnormalities of the placentas, and problems with fetal growth--to name a few. Make sure you are seeing an obstetrician experienced in multiples and get referred to maternal fetal medicine (mfm) obstetrician as needed.
