Is there any way to treat autism?

9 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

No cure, some help: Autism is only now becoming well understood. At its heart, it is a defect in the brain's ability to interact with others- to attend to what others are thinking and feeling, to be accurate in guessing what others are thinking and feeling. And therefore it is about absent or lacking social ability. There is no cure. But many interventions do help, such as aba therapies, floor time, and others.

YES!: See a true expert for multi-dimensional care. Autism manifests in various forms, probably has various causes, & is extremely complex to treat. Behavioral & social interventions are important, & increasingly psychoactive meds play an important role. These meds need be carefully selected & titrated for the individual, possibly addressing such features as anxiety, anger, mood, hyperactivity, etc.

Yes, you can help!: There is evidence that children with autism have multiple medical issues including allergies/immune, gut and nutritional problems that can be helped by medical management, diet and supplements. Things like chronic constipation and gastrointestinal pain will impact on a child's behaviour and response to interventions.

Yes, evidence-based:: The early start denver model, a comprehensive developmental behavioral intervention, begun at <30 mos. & continued for 2 yrs., shows improvement in iq, adaptive behavior & degree of autism. Early aba 25-40 hrs./wk can make great improvements in hfa & good improvement in kids with intellectual disability. See www.Aap.Org recommendations for diagnosis & treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.
