A member asked:

Is hypothyroidism related to bipolar disorder?

7 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes: One's thyroid gland is kind of like the body's thermostat. If it is not functioning properly, it can adversely affect a person's mood and cause depression, mania and anxiety. Also, medications given to help a person's mood may not work properly in the face of abnormal thyroid functioning. To make matters even more complicated, lithium (given for bipolar d/o) may cause thyroid problems.

No: These are completely different. But that not to say that thyroid imbalance cannot mimic a mood disorder or an anxiety disorder. Take care.
