See below: Local measures such as soaking in a warm bath and use of anti-inflammatory medicine (ibuprofen, aspirin) can help a little. It usually resolves over a few days, but if it is very hard and too painful, a doctor or emergency room may be able to open or remove the external hemorrhoid.

Ice pack, soak: Try soaking in warm water and alternating with ice pack. Take a stool softener such as colace or milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide). Consider seeing a surgeon, who can remove the hemorrhoid. Don't hold your stool, which will only make it harder and more likely to hurt when you do pass it.
