A member asked:

Can you get an infection on your fingernails if you bite them?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely: The nail itself may get fungal infections but this does not come from biting the nails. People who do bite their fingernails are very prone to developing infections around the nail. These often develop a collection of pus and cause redness and swelling in the skin along the edge of the nail, a "paronychia".
