Sometimes: Sometimes both are present. Look for other when one is found.

CSF dynamics: Chiari may alter the flow of cerebrospinal fluid at the cervico-cranial junction and may cause fluid pulsations and widening of the central canal. Theories abound but no definite mechanism has been confirmed. Usually the chiari and syrinx are diagnosed together so it is hard to tell if they are congenital, or if the chiari is causative.

Chiari: Additionally, though i sometimes recommend observation with some chiari patients, those with syringomyelia i offer surgical decompression.

See an expert: A surgical resident i know had a chiari malformation - went to a specialist - had it repaired and now works 80 hours/week with no disability. Obviously, these malformations vary from person to person, but make sure that you are seen by an expert. He was misdiagnosed and almost gave up his dream of a surgical career.

A few weeks: Most are out of the hospital in 1-2 days. You then have to take it easy ( no lifting >10 lbs) for about a month. Expect a stiff neck for a few weeks at least.

Ask ur Neurosurgeon: Many of the complications of decompression surgery have to do with opening the dura and research has shown that opening the dura does increase the complication rate.  there is a risk of infection and sometimes the patch that is sewn in leaks or becomes scarred.  the brain may slump further into the spinal area in the postoperatory or later.

A 34-year-old member asked:

Can a chiari malformation type one be picked up in an amniocentesis test?

Dr. Golder Wilson

No: Chiari malformation is associated with many conditions, some of which have abnormal chromosomes that would show up by amniocentesis. The malformation itself can be seen by fetal ultrasound but not usually at 16-18 weeks when visualization of fetal anomalies might prompt recommendation for amniocentesis.
