You need to see a MD: It is not normal for a 49 year old to have constant pain in their upper back. Without injury it is probable muscle spasm particularly of levator scapulae and/or the rhomboids. If so, and confirmed by an md, then a massage therapist or pt can help. I like to have them do graston technique...

Neck pain: It should also be noted that neck pain can refer to this region of the body. If things don't get better within a month, then i would recommend that you seek medical attention.
