Various: Surgical procedures can reduce activity of parts of the brain called subthalamic nucleus and internal globus pallidus.Deep brain stimulation is implantation of a stimulator which can be adjusted and removed if needed. Surgery to limit/remove communication from these areas (pallidotomy, thalamotomy) to other parts of the brain can be done. These procedures are irreversible.Others exist.

Deep Brain Stim: The current surgical treatment for parkinson's is deep brain stimulation. This involves the placement of electrodes into the substantia nigra area of the brain. This is where the defect that causes the disease is thought to affect the brain. The use of these devices decreases tremors and rigidity and improves the quality of life of most those patient's who get them.
