YES: Most gastric bypass procedures are done by general surgeons. It is part of the modern general surgical training curriculum for most surgical residencies. If the residency is deficient in bariatrics, one can pursue a bariatric fellowship. That being said, many general surgeons do not perform bariatric surgery by choice.

Maybe: All bariatric surgeons are trained general surgeons. Usually they've gone on to do a fellowship or additional training in bariatrics. Most general surgeons however, don't perform bariatrics, nor do they have the training to do so. Make sure your surgeon has done the additional training and bariatrics represents a significant portion of their practice i.e. More than 50% of practice is bariatrics.

Yes, but inquire exp: All bariatric-only surgeons started as general surgeons. Surgeons who do a variety of procedures are sometimes your best technical operators. You do want to ask about experience. Also want to make sure he/she has a good after-surgery program. Finally, look for a compassionate surgeon.
