Hard to say: There is some level of controversy over this. Since the virus that causes the cold sores is highly contagious, it is difficult to tell if a child may have picked up the virus in utero or if it was contracted after birth, perhaps by a kiss from mom/dad, drinking from a cup that the parents have touched their mouth to, etc.
