Does your thyroid gland have to be swollen for you to have a problem?

No: We see people with thyroid problems who don't have enlargement. Some are even born without their thyroid gland.

No: No, thyroid dyfunction can occur with an enlarged thyroid but can also be seen in persons whose thyroid has not changed size and appears to be of a normal volume. If you suspect thyroid disease, then see your pcp and/or an endocrinologist.
