Not normally used: Pet scan can be used for evaluation of metastatic renal cancer. It is not currently recommended as a regularly scheduled test for follow-up according to the nccn. These guidelines are made by a group of experts in each cancer area.

FDG PET: Fdg pet has low sensitivity and specificity for renal cancers. Problems include variable uptake by tumors and excretion of tracer in the collecting system. Aggressive tumors are more likely to be glucose avid. Fdg pet can be helpful in identifying metastases. New tracers such as i-124 girentuximab and f-18 fluorothymidine may be more helpful in the future.
