Nightguard: Get a professional nightguard made along with some specific exercises from your dentist to fatigue the muscles of mastication. Do the exercised prior to bedtime to take some of the tension out of them and help lessen the likelihood of grinding.

Depends on the cause: First you have to figure out what is causing you to grit your teeth. If it is due to stress then you will need to reduce your stress. If it is due to over active muscles then sometimes this can be corrected with muscle relaxants. If it is due to a bad bite then braces may be needed to correct your bite.

Nightguard: A nightguard, or an occlusal guard will physically protect your teeth from 'gritting'. A guard can act as a reminder for a patient not to "grit' or clench their teeth. Custom guards can be fabricated by your dentist. 'generic' guards are available at most drug stores.

See a dentist: Tooth grinding or clenching has many causes. It can be caused certain medications, be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea or a bite problem. Nightguards do not stop grinding, may worsen it, and do nothing to address the underlying reason it occurs. You need to have your bite checked, perhaps see a sleep physician.
