Bacteria: A moist environment is a breeding groundfor bacteria. Antiperspirants make the armpit dry so decrease the bacteria in that area. The odor comes from the byproducts of the bacteria.

Bacteria: Sweat itself doesn't have a smell but bacteria that live off the sweat give the odor you smell. No bacteria no smell. Less sweat less bacteria.
