How serious is listeria?

Depends: The severity of listeria infection depends on who is infected. People whose immune system is compromised, pregnant women, and the elderly are most significantly affected. In pregnancy, the infection can cause fetal loss. Others are more likely to get meningitis. Normals rarely have any issues with listeria.
