Common, also in USA: Listeria is a serous illness spread by contaminated food. It causes fever, muscle aches, diarrhea and miscarriages/premature birth. Experts think the disease is under diagnosed worldwide; it is found on all 5 continents tested- in cities and rural areas. It is not prevented by refrigeration. Cdc prevention guidelines http://1.Usa.Gov/szwfyw can help you minimize your chance of contracting it.

Common world wide: Listeria monocytogenes is widespread in nature, found in soil, decaying vegetation and water and as fecal flora of many mammals. It is distributed world wide. It is acquired by ingestion of contaminated food or drink. For prevention thoroughly cook all meats and wash all vegetables. Avoid cross contamination in food preparation. Do not consume unpasturized cheeses or milk.
