Orthopaedic surgeon : You may have dislocated or fractured your elbow and need to see an orthopaedic surgeon for x-rays and physical exam. Elbow instability and fractures can be difficult to treat. The sooner the problem is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated. Make sure your orthopaedic surgeon is board certified and is experienced with elbow trauma.

How acute?: If there is swelling and pain, you should get examined in person by a doctor. If has been some time, you may have damaged cartilage in your elbow. An MRI would determine if this was the case. In the acute (immediate post injury) phase, x rays and a clinical exam are the most appropriate.
