What's the between dementia and delirium?

Attention vs memory: Delirium is also known as acute confusional state or encephalopathy and involves impairments in attention and other areas of brain functioning. It is usually cause by infections, medications, surgery or anesthesia. Dementia is a general term for those illensses that cause memory problems, language problems, problem soving problems etc. Dementia greatly increases the risk of delirium.

Transient: Delirium is characterized by transient changes in sensorium in an otherwise cognitively intact person. It is usually the result of a medical issue which is of a toxic or metabolic origin (ie. Infection, medications, hypoxia). Dementia is a chronic, usually progressive cognitive decline which persists over time. Obviously, both can occur in the same person.

Delirium/Dementia: Delirium is with acute onset & change in level of consciousness. Dementia is more chronic, progressive decline in mental status functions.

Major Depression: This is the term used for clinical depression with classic neurovegetative signs & symptoms as defined in the diagnostic & statistical manual of mental illnesses (dsm). Symptoms are severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. Milder forms of mood changes can include dysthymia or grief or seasonal affective disorder.

Vistaril (hydroxyzine): Medications used after shelf life has expired are, for the most part, not effective. Check the date it was filled & contact a pharmacist to inquire.

Postural Hypotention: Other possible causes are medications that alter blood pressure.

Fibromyalgia: Most cases, with proper tx, in the long run, stabilize & remain in remission phase for years.

OCD: Ocd is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessive thoughts that reoccur & consume daily functioning, along with compulsive rituals which are repeated acts that also interfere with daily functioning. These cause significant distress.
