How effective were iron lungs?

Reasonably good: The drinker respirator, one of the forms of the iron lung, saved lots of lives of those suffering from respiratory muscle paralysis from poliomyelitis. Since there was no tube in the airway, the upper respiratory system's protective mucus was not compromised.
