A member asked:

When were iron lungs last used?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Still in use: The iron lung encloses the chest and provides negative pressure causing the chest to expand and air to flow in through the nose and mouth. Iron lungs have been used since 1927 mostly during the polio epidemics. A cuirass ventilator is a modern iron lung enclosing just the chest and is wearable unlike the iron lung. Positive pressure ventilation is used today unless contraindicated.
