Yes: Belly sleeping was popular in the us from the post wwi period until the 90"s. People thought it might prevent problems if they spit up. Unfortunately the oriental cultures (belly sleeping is taboo) had a better plan. Crib death has declined in the us by 40-50% since we recognized back sleeping was safer. After 4-5m, they will roll & sleep as they want.(this is past the period of most risk).
