Breath Test: There is a breath hydrogen test. You drink a sample of lactose containing liquid and breathe every 15 -30 minutes into a bag. The samples are run on a machine and based on a rise in hydrogen produced from bacteria in your colon you are diagnosed as lactose intolerant.

Avoid and monitor: A doctor can usually tell if you have lactose intolerance by asking questions about your symptoms. An elimination of dairy products for a short time to see if your symptoms improve suggests lactose intolerance. Sometimes a hydrogen breath test or a blood sugar test is used to confirm the diagnosis.

Avoidance: there are tests to diagnose lactose intolerance, but often just eliminating lactose containing foods such as cow's milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream is the easiest way. if your symptoms get better and gas, abdominal cramping and or loose stools improve then it is very probable that you have a lactose sensitivity. You then could start back on some lactose containing foods and see what happens
