A 41-year-old member asked:
how to help gf with feeling guilty about taking her virginity?

Morality: It sounds like you think it is wrong for your gf to feel badly after losing her virginity. Many cultures and religions place a high value on virginity. My suggestion is that you respect how she feels and consider your own actions.

How can I stop feeling guilty about things im not getting done?

Unrealistic goals: Perhaps part of your problem is that you set unrealistic goals for yourself and then feel disappointed in yourself (and guilty) when you can't meet your self-imposed deadlines. Alternatively, if procrastination is a problem, then breaking down tasks into more bite-size (and do-able) pieces might help a lot. Remember: forgive yourself again and again and again. Admittedly, it's hard to do!

How can I stop feeling guilty because the house is messy?

Depends: Dust bunnies have never attacked anyone. If its minor clutter don't sweat it. If your house looks like an audition for "hoarders" contact a physician--this can indicate a possible disorder which can be treated. Good luck!

A 51-year-old member asked:
Can feeling guilty cause health problems?
2 doctor answers • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Donald Hazlett answered
Psychiatry 54 years experience
Certainly: Feeling guilty is a close cousin to serious anxiety. Things occur when a person has guilt associated anxiety. Our parasympathetic nervous system can go on a binge affecting heart beat, G.I. Activity, sleep, appetite, energy levels and things like our mental clarity and decision making capabilities. Guilt can become depression and it's very clear that depression has health consequences.

Thank you. Like all negative feelings, guilt should be dealt with as quickly as possible.

With ocs is it normal to have guilty feelings when you eat?

Dr. Jerald Ratner answered

Perhaps: I believe you are speaking about obsessive-compulsive disorder which is often part of an eating disorder where guilt about eating leads to serious weight loss; known as anorexia involving avoidance of food.
I would strongly suggest being evaluated by a psychiatrist.

I know I need to stop shopping but i'm not ready. How do you stop feeling so guilty afterward?

Dr. Lawrence Smith answered

Decide what you want: Guilt can be thought of as appropriate or inappropriate. If you've done something that you believe to be wrong (e.g., violated someone's rights) you feel guilty. If you've over-spent on shopping, you might feel regret because you have let yourself down by neglecting long-term goals. In order to stop feeling this regret you must lower your long-term goals or stop over-spending.
